In 2022 and 2023, I took part in the 100 New-To-Me Albums Challenge, which was created by a writer named Nia Simone McLeod.

The goal of the challenge is very simple: Listen to at least 100 new-to-you albums within one year.

It doesn’t matter if the albums are brand-new releases or ones that have been out for many years. All that matters is that you’ve never heard them before.

In 2022, I ended up listening to 101 new-to-me albums. In 2023, I listened to 112 of them. I briefly thought about not doing the challenge again this year, but considering that I listen to music almost every day and I’m always seeking out music I’ve never heard before, the thought of not doing the challenge again seemed kind of silly to me.

My initial goal for 2024 was 100 albums – but I tend to be a little competitive with myself. Now I want to beat the 112 I did last year, so my goal for 2024 is 113 albums.

As in the previous two years, a big part of my listening goals is for me to keep trying out artists and genres I might not normally listen to. I want to delve more into Jazz, R&B, and old Classic Rock I’m unfamiliar with. I also want to listen to more instrumental albums and movie soundtracks than I normally do.

If you look at my above list, you may notice that there are some artists listed multiple times, such as Alanis Morissette and April Wine. A big part of why that is, in addition to the fact that I like each of them a lot, is that each of them has been the main topic on episodes of my Gotta Pop podcast. To speak with a decent knowledge of their music, I took ‘deep dives’ into their music. I’m sure there will be several other artists I do the same thing with throughout the year.

As a music lover, it’s fun for me to do ‘research’ like that!

I’ll keep adding to the above list as I continue to listen to new-to-me music throughout the year.
