When Multiple ‘Twisters’ Spun Into My Podcast

As of August 13, 2024, people can rent or purchase digital copies of the 2024 blockbuster hit film Twisters. What’s amazing about that, at least to me, is that the film was generally released in theaters less than one month ago on July 19th.

It’s not as if Twisters was a big flop and that’s the reason it’s already available digitally. It’s actually been a huge hit and is currently still performing very well in theaters.

So, why release it digitally now? On one hand, financially speaking, it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. However, on the other hand that we haven’t talked about yet, I suppose there is a lot of logic to it.

After all, diehard film lovers usually see new films in theaters within the first few weeks that they’re released, so why not take their money during those first few weeks and then quickly take it again when they rent or buy digital copies of the movie?

Plus, of course, they’re also quickly reaching film lovers who, for whatever reason, don’t want to go to theaters to see a movie. Financially, it makes a lot of sense to wait for digital copies, especially if you look at the combined costs of movie tickets with the costs of snacks, drinks, etc. from the concession stands at theaters. Going to movie theaters is not an inexpensive experience, that’s for sure!

Because of the above, and also because of the possibility of way too many noisy and obnoxious people in theaters, my wife Lisa and I usually prefer to just watch movies at home. However, we made an exception for Twisters and went to see it in IMAX during its opening weekend.

Am I glad I saw it then instead of watching it now, just a few weeks later, in the comfort of my own home? Absolutely! Seeing it in IMAX was a fantastic experience that was worth every penny and I’m glad we did it.

Shortly after seeing Twisters, I wrote a review of it that I published in Plethora of Pop on Medium. Right around the same time, a fellow writer and podcaster friend of mine named Candace Estelle also wrote a review of Twisters which she shared there. Since we both had similar thoughts about the film, I invited her onto my Gotta Pop podcast to talk about both it and the original Twister movie from 1996.

We had a lot of fun talking about the two movies – and a very wide variety of other pop culture-related things. It turned into a fairly long discussion, so I split it up into three episodes when I posted it.

If you’re a fan of Twisters and/or Twister, or if you’d just like to see two pop culture-loving nerds geeking out over the movies and several other things, you may enjoy these episodes of Gotta Pop. The various places where the audio-only editions of them can be heard can be found here.

Below are the YouTube editions of the episodes.

Thank you for your time. Have a fantastic day!
